Crocodile meat

Of all living beings the crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is the closest relative to the dinosaurs.Its physical structure has barely changed during the last sixty-five million years. Although crocodiles belong to the reptile family along with the lizard, the snake and the tortoise, with regard to their build they have more in common with birds than with any other reptile. It is not surprising therefore that crocodile meat tastes more like chicken or turkey than anything else.

Crocodiles are cold-blooded predators and rather peculiar. Their stomach contains a load of stones with which they regulate their depth in the water. In addition crocodiles are able to decide on the sex of their progeny. Eggs hatched at a temperature lower than 31° C are always female. Male crocodiles are hatched above 30° C. The Nile crocodile is the most common crocodile in Africa. It can grow up to seven metres in length, weigh three hundred kilograms and reach a hundred years of age. Crocodiles are bred on a large scale, particularly in South-Africa, for both their skin and their meat.
